Slow Spring Awakening

It is almost feeling springlike some days now, with glimmers of sunshine through the rain and mud! I love the season of spring with its promise of a new beginning and re-emergence after the long winter months.

Here, Wendy Young shares some of her wisdom and recommendations to make the most of the 7 days leading up to the Spring Equinox to cleanse our bodies and minds, and plant some seeds for the upcoming spring:

“Can you make room for slowness in your life? To feel and appreciate the sounds, sights and scents of spring life unfolding?

As we welcome the wonders of spring with warmer weather, the return of animals and the growth of plants from their winter hibernation, we also undergo an internal transformation. According to Charaka Samhita, a great Ayurvedic sage, 7 days before and after the Spring Equinox is the transition time to slowly make the changes necessary to joyfully welcome in the new season. This junction of the seasons is also the best time to cleanse. The Spring Equinox is Saturday 21st March.

Our bodies and minds are a reflection of nature, and often need only the slightest nudge to return to their natural state of vitality and clarity. When we make changes to our lifestyle and our food that are in harmony with the seasons and with our unique body-mind constitution, we strengthen our immunity. This supports an optimal state of health and is a simple way to energise our body, enhance our creativity and open us up to new possibilities.

Nature teaches us that space contains infinite potential and is the seed of all creation. From the space, quiet and rest of winter, comes the potential for rebirth and new possibilities of spring. I invite you to take a few moments now to reflect on what seeds you wish to plant this spring? They could be seeds pertaining to your health, to personal transformation and spiritual growth, to birthing a new relationship or career… the possibilities are endless… the seeds of spring are yours for the planting!

Suggested Spring routine:

  • Wake up about 30 minutes before sunrise. It’s important to be up and moving before the sun rises as this moves toxins and stagnant lymph that have accumulated overnight.
  • Morning routine can include: warm lemon and/or ginger water upon waking, self massage with warm sesame seed oil before your shower, skin brushing (twice a week) and a brisk early morning walk!
  • Clean up your diet: just as we spring clean our home it’s time to spring clean our inner home. Avoid heavy and dulling foods like excess dairy, wheat, oily and cold foods. Eat warming and astringent foods, spicing them up with cloves, ginger, cumin, mustard seeds and black pepper. Green juicing is a great way to detox the liver and cells.
  • Enjoy some type of dynamic daily exercise. The best way to reduce the heaviness and stagnation from the cold months is to move the lymph and blood that circulate throughout the body.
  • Slowly energize your yoga practice with more challenging asanas which focus on the chest and include stimulating breathing practices.
  • Meditation helps to digest the events of the day on a mental and emotional level allowing you to access the precious present moment. Daily practice is a profound way to help clear the ‘clutter’ from your being and support embodied and conscious living.

I’ve always been inspired by the innate wisdom and abundant beauty of nature, and especially in spring by the delicate floral scents and vibrant colours of the new shoots and leaves. Remember to pause, take a breath and enjoy the magic of slow spring unfolding!”

We’ve just had the best 2 nights in the Ash Valley yurt! The outdoor bath was brilliant! Complete privacy, if you don’t include the sheep 🐑 my 11yo boys... have loved chopping wood, starting fires, making dens and playing in the stream whilst my partner and I sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the peace 😌 I would 100% recommend this place, Margaret and her daughter were most welcoming. You have everything you need already there. Thank you for such a lovely experience xread more

Absolutely magical 😍 I so wish I'd booked for more than two nights! We stayed in the meadow yurt, complete privacy, surrounded by forest and mountains, and... nothing to hear but for birds and waterfalls. There is so much on site to explore we didn't have time to see half of it! We spent an afternoon climbing up the hill behind the yurt and swimming in waterfalls before jumping in that beautiful wood fired bath 😍 and visited a few beautiful spots in Snowdonia. Can't wait to come back!read more

We enjoyed our 1st stay last week for 4 nights with our baby in a tipi and we loved every second of it. we had a warm welcome when we arrived, tipi already... warmed up too. we were supplied with every thing we needed. we enjoyed the lush hot bath looking at the clear sky at night. the view every morning was beautifal. everything so peaceful and quiet. all we could hear was the sound of the running water, trees rustling in the wind and the shoothing sound of wildlife. It was perfect. thankyou to Angus and Margaret. you literally thought of everything. thankyou. Will be booking for next year. cant wait.read more

Had a brilliant time in the meadow yurt with our 2 children. It was so peaceful and relaxing, everything that we needed was supplied. It was lovely being... able to sit outside by the fire toasting marshmallows and having bbqs. The bath was amazing being able to totally relax outside in the peace and quiet. Our boys loved it especially the bath and paddling in the river. We would recommend to go try it to every one.read more

After a last minute decision to go away for the night we came across Eco-Retreats and their amazing looking Tipis and Yurts, set in equally amazing... surroundings. They were so accomadating for us as we could only stay one night, and had rang up on the same morning we were staying. We got such a warm, friendly welcome and they really do go out their way to be there to meet & greet you (you'll understand just how much when you go). What a truly beautiful site quite literally away from it all. We stayed in the Forest Tipi which was set within it's own patch of land up a short trail to really give it an extra isolated feel. The outdoor bath really is amazing and well worth the wait to warm up, even in early April temperatures and light rain so would be absolutely perfect on more warmer nights. The Tipi itself was equipped with all that you'd need and the Chimenea did a good job of keeping us warm, even with the surprise blanket of snow we got in the night. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a truly different experience and appreciates being close to nature and getting back to basics, while still retaining the comfort of a bed at night.read more

From booking to arrival they were very helpful. After a quick overview of how to operate the tipi and fires we were left to our own devises to enjoy the... tranquility and setting of the waterfall tipi. The tipi has everything you need for your stay and we found it warm and dry despite the wet weather. The fire in the tipi takes the place of the TV and the dancing flames soon become mesmerising; the background sounds of the waterfall and rain on canvas are relaxing and the dancing flames of the tea lights in the lanterns complete your escape from the modern world. The rain stopped long enough for us to enjoy a warm bath in the open air in the woods and is well worth the effort of keeping the fire going. All in all a fantastic escape away from modern distractions.read more
