Forest bathing and wellbeing

What is Forest Bathing?

Forest bathing in a woodland environment has the potential to transform our wellbeing for the better, especially when experienced as part of a peaceful forest retreat in the UK.

Emma, a karma yoga volunteer at Eco Retreats, recently attended a Social Forestry course with the Open College Network and is hoping to use her certificate to introduce forest bathing and mindfulness activities in the forest at Eco Retreats. To continue our forest wellness theme after our recent article on the benefits of ecotherapy, she shares some of her learnings here:

I am sure anyone who has stayed at Eco Retreats will agree that spending time in the forest can be truly enchanting. Many guests leave their forest retreat feeling peaceful, relaxed and more connected to nature.

Why Forest Environments Improve Wellbeing

Enjoying the present moment and being truly mindful in an environment free from WiFi, phone calls, meetings and the pressures of modern life can be a challenge in today’s world. This is leading to increasing mental and emotional strain, as people’s energy is slowly drained by the constant flow of information.

The forest offers a place to recharge and find ourselves again, making it the perfect setting for a natural retreat or forest retreat experience.

The Science Behind Forest Bathing

Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, originated in Japan and is increasingly being used as a wellbeing practice by doctors and therapists. The practice involves walking slowly and mindfully through woodland, taking in the atmosphere through all your senses.

In the 1980s, extensive scientific research by the Japanese government found that just two hours of forest bathing could reduce blood pressure, lower cortisol levels and improve concentration and memory beyond the usual benefits of fresh air and exercise.

Trees release natural compounds called phytoncides, which help plant communities thrive. These compounds also support our immune system, and our bodies naturally absorb what we need. During forest bathing, our emotional, physical and mental wellbeing are gently restored, often leaving us with a renewed sense of calm and clarity.

How to Practice Forest Bathing

Forest bathing is not like a hike or a typical nature walk. It is a slower, more intentional experience. You move gently through the forest, allowing your senses to guide you.

Guided meditations can help quieten the mind and deepen your connection with your surroundings. At first, it can feel challenging to slow down, but over time, your body and mind begin to relax into the rhythm of the forest.

Why We Are Drawn to Nature

Spending time in woodland environments changes the way we feel and think. Our awareness increases, and we begin to respond more naturally to what our body needs.

As humans, we are naturally drawn to nature. This connection is deeply rooted in our evolution, as we have spent far more time living in natural environments than in modern urban settings.

The forest acts as a psychologically restorative space. It helps restore energy, reduce stress and bring balance back to both body and mind. Research has even shown that areas with more green space are associated with improved wellbeing and more positive social behaviour.

A Natural Way to Reconnect

Forest bathing has the potential to reconnect us not only with nature, but with ourselves. This connection is more important than ever as we navigate the challenges of modern life and the wider environmental issues we face.

To support guests in bringing these practices into everyday life, Eco Retreats is also developing a community platform focused on mindfulness, nature connection and simple living. Watch this space for updates.
